† Combined mode: Local students taking programmes in combined mode can attend full-time (12-18 credit units per semester) or part-time (no more than 11 credit units per semester) study in different semesters without seeking approval from the University. For non-local students, they will be admitted to these programmes for either full-time or part-time studies. Non-local students must maintain the required credit load for their full-time or part-time studies and any changes will require approval from the University.

Programme Aims and Objectives

The Master of Science in Environmental Science and Technology programme has been designed to produce graduates with highly marketable specialist skills in key areas of environmental science, technology and management. Students can also select a special option on Environmental Health and Food Safety with the degree. Graduates are expected to make significant contributions to the management, protection and conservation of the various environmental resources of the region and beyond, both in the government and private sectors.

Entrance Requirements

To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements and have:
 
  • a degree in a relevant science or engineering discipline such as Biology, Chemistry, Civil/Chemical/Environmental Engineering, and Environmental Science/Studies, or equivalent;
OR
  • evidence of academic and professional attainments acceptable for this purpose by the University and the Department.
 
Preference will be given to applicants who are currently working in areas related to environmental management.
 
Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should also fulfill the following minimum English proficiency requirement:
 
  • TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test) or 213 (computer-based test) or 79 (internet-based test); or
  • Overall band score of 6 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
  • Score 450 in the new College English Test (CET6) of Chinese mainland or a pass in the old CET-6 test; or
  • Other equivalent qualifications.

Course Description

Courses, including Environmental Sampling and Risk Assessment; Environmental Resources Management; Integrated Waste Management; and Pollution Control; are offered in the first year to introduce students to the basic theory, knowledge and principles of environmental management. Two courses, Food Processing & Food Chemistry and Food Safety & Surveillance are for students who select the Environmental Health and Food Safety option.

These are followed by more advanced and specialized courses, which aim to equip students with specific knowledge and specialist skills in key areas of environmental management, such as Environmental Analysis, Pollution Monitoring, Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Health and Toxicology.  Concepts and theories developed in our courses are complemented and reinforced by the Dissertation course.

Remarks

You can join the programme as a course attendee (not an MSc student) for individual course(s), without the immediate intention of getting the MSc degree, to obtain an attendance certificate or certificate of completion. The credits earned can be counted towards:
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Science and Technology --- 24 credit units
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Science and Technology with Environmental Health and Food Safety --- 30 credits units
  • Master of Science degree in Environmental Science and Technology --- 30 credit units
  • Master of Science degree in Environmental Science and Technology with Environmental Health and Food Safety --- 36 credits units
The full MSc degree award requires 30 credit units, with the completion of taught courses plus a MSc Dissertation. The full MSc degree award with Environmental Health and Food Safety option requires 36 credit units, with the completion of taught courses plus a MSc Dissertation. Students who have completed 24 credit units of taught courses may choose to exit the programme at the postgraduate diploma award level. Students who have completed 30 credit units may exit the programme with a postgraduate diploma with Environmental Health and Food Safety.
 
To obtain a Certificate of Completion (per course basis), students must satisfy with an attendance rate of at least 80%, complete all the coursework, and pass all examinations.  To obtain a Certificate of Attendance, students have to achieve an attendance rate of 80%.
