Programme Aims and Objectives

The primary aim of the programme is to equip you with a comprehensive and in-depth study of major psychological theories and studies in relation to the practice of education.  Upon completion of the programme, you are expected to:

  • explore the contemporary issues in the field of psychology of education and its application in inclusive education;
  • examine analytically the philosophy and values relating to the education of students with diverse educational needs in Hong Kong;
  • use a wide variety of teaching strategies and initiate curriculum adaptation for students with diverse educational needs;
  • carry out educational research with appropriate research techniques; and
  • solve issues in and devise innovative solutions for the field of psychology of education by applying knowledge of human motivation, psychopathology and counseling practices.

Entrance Requirements

To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements and have:

  • a recognized bachelor's degree from one of the universities in Hong Kong or from any overseas institution recognized for this purpose by the University, or
  • an equivalent qualification, or
  • provided evidence of academic and professional attainments acceptable for this purpose by the University.

Preference will be given to those with at least two years' experience in the educational field.

Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should also fulfill the following minimum English proficiency requirement:

  • TOEFL score 550 (paper-based test) or 213 (computer-based test) or 79 (internet-based test); or
  • Overall band 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
  • Score 450 in the new College English Test (CET-6) of Chinese mainland or a pass in the old CET-6 test; or
  • Other equivalent qualifications.

Course Description

The programme comprises two main components:

  • inclusive education
  • psychological and educational intervention

The inclusive education component covers comprehensive knowledge and practical skills relating to the field of inclusive education. You will learn about skills in applying instructions and classroom management in inclusive settings.

The psychological and educational component consists of courses such as Research Design and Analysis in Psychology; Psychopathology; Educational Psychology;  Vocational Counseling; as well as Educational Assessment and Evaluation. You will develop an in-depth understanding of the psychological aspects of education and will be able to evaluate critically the relationship between theory, research and practice in this field.

Programme of Study

The programme consists of 30 credits in the 2-year part-time study. Students who have completed the first year (15 credits) and fulfilled all requirements and decide not to proceed further may be awarded a Post-Graduate Certificate in Inclusive Education.
