Alumni Achievement
Dr Haiyang LI
PhD (1998), CityU
Associate Professor,
Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business,
Rice University, USA
“As an alum of the doctoral program at City University of Hong Kong, I am honored to share my professional experience with the CityU community.
I am currently an associate professor at the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business, Rice University, USA. I earned my doctoral degree in strategy and innovation management from the Department of Management at CityU in 1998 (Dr. Kwaku Atuahene-Gima was my committee chair) (I had Bachelor and Master degrees from Renmin University). I joined Lingnan University as an assistant professor in 1999 and then I moved to Texas A&M University as an assistant professor in 2001. I joined Rice University in 2005 and made my tenure there in 2008.
My research interests focus on technology entrepreneurship, innovation, and multinational firms’ strategy in emerging markets. Since I completed my doctoral degree, I have published 24 articles in peer-refereed journals with 10 of them appearing in the top-tier journals including Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, and Journal of Marketing. The quality of my scholarly work is validated by the awards and recognitions I have received. I was ranked among the top 10 scholars in terms of individual contributions to the empirical literature on China (2000-2005). My work won the Best Paper Award at the American Marketing Association’s Winter Marketing Educators’ Conference in 2001. My academic contribution is also evidenced by my services to the profession. I serve on the editorial review boards of multiple journals including the Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Journal of High Technology Management Research, and Multinational Business Review. I also serve as the Representative-at-large for both the Asia Academy of Management and the International Association of Chinese Management Research.
I believe that my professional achievements have attested to the exceptional quality of the doctoral program at City U.”

PGCHKL (1998), MALL (2000), LLM (2001), CityU
Chairman, the Employees Retraining Board
Chairman, the Applied Research Council
Chairman, the Hong Kong Automotive Parts and Accessory Systems R&D Centre
"Opportunities are for the prepared. Being the Chairman of the Employees Retraining Board (ERB), the largest job skills training network in the territory, I fully endorse the philosophy of lifelong learning, and our work is simply to better prepare the workforce in Hong Kong to take on every challenge and opportunity ahead.
I am no exemption in lifelong learning. I’ve taken three postgraduate programmes in law in the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) from 1997 to 2001, namely the Postgraduate Certificate in Hong Kong Laws, Master of Arts in Language and Law and Master of Laws in Chinese and Comparative Law, to facilitate my career development.
Being the then Managing Director of a worldwide enterprise responsible for global operation of lighting products, acquiring the knowledge of common law as well as civil law in mainland China was essential for tapping the ever-growing market in China as part of the strategic plan in global business development. It also benefits my community services in the years afterwards, including the current chairmanship with the ERB.
ERB, as a statutory body, with the main function to co-ordinate, fund and monitor appointed training bodies to offer training courses and services designed to meet the growing needs and rapid changes in the market, it is imperative that our services are for the good of the people and accountable to the public. The legal training with the CityU not only helps widening my knowledge, but also facilitates critical analysis and creative thinking, which are essential attributes in the policy formulation and development of ERB’s training services.
I am a believer in the T-learning model: “To know something of everything and everything of something.” There is no terminal point in learning, with the drive to perfection, one can always have rooms to improve and with new horizons to explore."

PhD (2003), CityU
Associate Professor and Head, Department of Translation and Interpreting,
Vice Dean, School of English and International Studies,
Beijing Foreign Studies University
“I was a university English teacher before joining the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics of CityU as a PhD student. I conducted research on translation under Dr ZHU Chunshen’s supervision. My education there has literally reshaped my academic career ever since. I was very much impressed at the top scholarship demonstrated by its international faculty, the liberal and encouraging environment for academic pursuit, the wonderful opportunities for research students to make a presence on the international scene, and the various professional supporting services and facilities. All these set me on a path of seeking excellence. I could still recall the extensive and inspiring discussions with my supervisor on selected research topics, the well-designed curricula, the eye-opening lectures of the Chinese Civilization Centre, my presentations at international conferences, and my participation in a UN Internship Program at its NY headquarters. Without these stimulating and rewarding experiences, my academic performance and vision would not have been in its current form.”
